Donna Summer – (If It) Hurts Just A Little

Emotion: Persuasive

Artist: Donna Summer

Track: (If It) Hurts Just A Little

Album: Donna Summer

Release Details: Geffen, 1982

So sad to hear the news about Donna Summer’s passing yesterday. When flicking through my record shelves I wasn’t surprised at just how much of her material I have on vinyl and it’s a pretty safe bet to say I particularly enjoy her work with Giorgio Moroder.

Friday’s are usually dedicated to our more #topsoff selections but considering the nature of the post I’ve opted for a more emotional 80′s groove produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. Spot the sample in this track as used by no other than French house maestros Cassius.

R.I.P the queen of D.I.S.C.O. No doubt she’s currently catching up with friends at the big disco in the sky.

Edwin Starr – Contact (Baggy’s Extended Reach Around)

Emotion: Elation

Artist: Edwin Starr

Track: Contact (Baggy’s Extended Reach Around)

Release Details: Unreleased, 2009

Yes. It’s Friday. It can only mean one thing…

#LETSGETOURFUCKINGTOPSOFF

I absolutely love this record. Back when we were working on the Cosmic Disco blog we used to do our fair share of DJ gigs, not only in Manchester but people used to actually pay us to play records at their parties up and down the country. Hard to believe, I know.

I put together this very simple cut and paste edit using Sound Forge back in 2009 in about 30 minutes. A very straight forward arrangement done with the aim of making it easier for me to mix in/out of based on the style of the old school editors who used to do this shit with tape. Just enough jiggery-pokery here and there with the intro and percussive breaks. Unfortunately I don’t have the original .wav, just this 320kbps .mp3 file (In case anyone asks)…

I featured the track on one of my favourite personal mixes ‘Disco Whiskers‘ which was created in preparation for a guest slot we had at a disco night based in Bristol.

Enjoy the weekend and if at any point you find yourself dancing with your #topsoff you know it’s been a winner.

Elvis Costello & The Attractions – I Wanna Be Loved (Version Discotheque)

Emotion: Self Pity

Artist: Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Track: I Wanna Be Loved (Version Discotheque)

Release Details: F-Beat, 1984

Today’s submission comes courtesy of Eddy Rhead a.k.a Ed Zone, who has been responsible for numerous dubbed out remixes and edit’s of highly charged Emotional Pop and Disco, the likes of which have been featured on the recent Philadelphia International Re-Edits compilation. To check out more Ed-Zone material head over to his SoundCloud account and if this wasn’t enough Eddy also finds time to write for the Modernist Magazine, is a mad-keen cyclist and excellent photographer. Eddy also has lots of good stories about famous DJ’s from the nineties… You can stalk him by following him over at Twitter.

Here’s his story…

In 1984, when I was 14, I was arrested for shoplifting. I had actually got away with it but my partner in crime grassed on me and I got stitched up good and proper…

Anyway, I spent a day in the cells and obviously got a right good bollocking from my dad and when it was all over locked myself in my room and played this record over and over again. I absolutely loved this at the time  and played it all the time anyway but in this case I played it over and over again in some pathetic cry for help, with the reasoning being that I was shoplifting was because I was some tortured soul who had be badly treated and was lacking love. In reality I was just a pain in the arse teenager who was too lazy to get a paper round and pay for stuff instead of nicking it.

Even before the whole shoplifting episode I found this song to be heart wrenching. Elvis sings like he means it and the accompanying video only adds to that sense. It ticked all the boxes for me as a teenager it was earnest but poppy and as an added bonus had Green Gartside on backing vocals (I was a massive Scritti Politti fan at the time).

There was even a nice 12″ version of it called the ‘Version Discotheque’.

I dont know if Elvis found his true love – I hope he did.

I’m also hoping I don’t get arrested for shoplifting again. If I do I’ll play this track to the magistrates and see if they will be lenient.

James Ingram – Yah Mo B There (Jellybean Club Mix)

Emotion: Realisation

Artist: James Ingram

Track: Yah Mo B There (Jellybean Club Mix)

Release Details: QWest, 1984

The sad thing about vinyl not being the format of choice for the major labels (Or any label in fact…) is that new releases today rarely have the opportunity to fill the side of a 12″ record.

What this used to mean back in the 1980′s is that a producer of choice was given a track that was originally created for radio play (i.e. Just over 3 mins…) and the opportunity to remix it to create an extended (Or ‘Club’) version that could last anything up to 8+minutes adding additional instrumentation, extending the intros and breaks including overdubbing various effects into the (Re)mix, creating a whole new and producer unique track.

John ‘Jellybean’ Benitez (One time DJ at The Funhouse) became an established producer in the 1980′s working with the likes of Madonna (Of who he was nailing…), Whitney Houston, Hall & Oates and Talking Heads to name only a few.

Using his extensive dance experience Jellybean uses almost proto-house sounding handclaps with his typical use of latin percussion to give the backing track more space whilst allowing McDonald and Ingram lead the chorus with their vocal for a perfect balance between the original and the ‘Club Mix’.

An excellent example of what remixes used to be about…

M+M – Come Out And Dance

Emotion: Self Loathing

Artist: M+M

Track: Come Out And Dance

Album: Mystery Walk

Release Details: Wave, 1984

I usually offer up something that’s Hi-NRG over the weekend’s but I’m absolutely cream crackered after last weekends schenanigans with the rest of the Emo-Pop posse. So much so that although I should be out enjoying vibes, I’m too strung out still…

This track kinda’ catches that vibe.

Rave safe, yeah?
