Supercharge – Think I’m Gonna Fall (In Love) [Long Version]

Emotion: Denial

Artist: Supercharge

Track: Think I’m Gonna Fall (In Love) [Long Version]

Release Details: Virgin, 1978

Barry finds himself volunteering for yet another late shift after strict instructions from his wife to make sure he starts leaving the office early to spent more time with the children.

During the drive home he checks the clock on the dashboard to notice it’s way past midnight when motorway maintenance forces him off the highway several junctions before his usual turn-off. After following the diversion for a few miles he stops his car to reset the sat-nav and gather his bearings.

After a frustrating 20 minutes of U-turns, driving the wrong way down one-way streets and general confusion Barry finds himself in the middle of what looks like a disused industrial estate where abandoned articulated trailers and what seem like the carcasses of their unattached cabins are sprawled randomly across what was once possibly a holding car park.

The sat-nav is refusing to connect with it’s GPS satellite and suddenly the weather takes a turn for the worse when a tap on the window makes him jump.

Startled, he turns to see a shadowy figure signalling to wind down his window. Reluctantly he does so…

‘You lost love?’ a huskily voiced woman asks.

‘Yes. Can you tell me how to…’ and before he can finish his sentence the woman has made her way around the front of the vehicle, opens the passenger door and sits herself down in the empty seat next to him.

‘Do you need a hand?’ she asks.

‘Yes, i’m lost and need to…’ and once again before he can finish his sentence Barry feels his groin being caressed by the unexpected visitor.

Somewhat shocked he starts to speak but finds himself lost for words as the woman’s grip on his groin tightens upon which he closes his eyes and continues to let the womans hand wander further still.

After several seconds Barry opens his eyes to find several middle aged men with their faces pressed firmly against the windows staring into the vehicle.

Barry switches on the car stereo and closes back his eyes…

Electric Light Orchestra – Last Train To London

Emotion: Resentment

Artist: Electric Light Orchestra

Track: Last Train To London

Album: Discovery

Release Details: Jet, 1979

I was in London at a conference yesterday. Now although I don’t dispise the capital as much as fellow Emotional-Popper – Niles, I do think it’s too big/crowded/over-rated and impersonal. Give me boutique Manchester any day of the week…

*EmotionalPopFact* As much of an ‘Aficionado‘ classic this track is, Niles prefers the Atomic Kitten version.

Suede – The Asphalt World

Emotion: Melancholy

Artist: Suede

Track: The Asphalt World

Album: Dog Man Star

Release Details: Nude Records, 1994

I’m listening to this, looking out the 6th floor window of my room in Glasgow. It’s dark, there are seedy looking people knocking about and the city looks dirty and (un)appealing.

There’s clearly no better soundtrack than this, Suede’s finest moment. It’s a 10 minute rock opus calling all the best bits of Berlin Bowie, cokey Roxy Music and introspective Morrissey.

There’s a deluxe version of Dog Man Star on iTunes at the moment. Not only is it my favourite album of all time, so therefore definitely worthy of a download, but the new version has the unedited ‘Asphalt World’ and ‘the Wild Ones’. Go, run along to iTunes, download it, then stare out of the window forlornly, flicking your fringe out of your eyes.

Mark Almond – The City

Emotion: Fear

Artist: Mark Almond

Track: The City

Album: Other People’s Rooms

Release Details: Horizon, 1978

Niles is working in London today. He hates London. He’s had to travel on an early morning train that smells like shit whilst listening to inane conversations about bikini lines and tanning sessions whilst nosey passengers read his phone from over his shoulder. To top it off he’s with a mormon.

This one’s for you buddy…

Christopher Cross – Ride Like The Wind

Thanks to McNulty for providing us with this heart wrenching look at Christopher Cross’ ‘Ride Like the Wind’.

Emotion: Fear, Hope

Artist: Christopher Cross

Track: Ride Like The Wind

Album: Christopher Cross

Release details: Warner Bros, 1979

In 1979 Christopher Cross released his eponymous titled debut LP, which mysteriously features a flamingo on the cover (as does my 7” of Ride Like The Wind) and it is absolutely superb, Ride Like The Wind one of many stand out tracks on it. It is fair to say his star has faded since then, whilst putting out decent records they have never been particularly popular.

I don’t know why Christopher Cross’ anti-hero chose to kill ten men, but as the son of a lawless man his path in life was always likely to be down the less than legal route. He’s American, gun ownership is a right, there is any number of reasons he was carrying a gun. I’m not going to judge him.

The opening lyrics set the scene for the story, ‘It is the night. My body’s weak. I’m on the run. No time to sleep.’ The opening lyrics also set the scene for most red blooded music lovers; I find it impossible to listen to it without my right fist clenching in sympathy.

I’m assuming he is guilty; there is no reason we shouldn’t. He wants to get away and breaks from custody, and like many an American fugitive heads for the relative safety and immunity from prosecution of the criminal areas of South America. The power in the chorus almost destroys me every time it is played, the desperation of the distance to the Mexican border, the fear of being caught and the inability to sleep but then the sheer hope of putting every last ounce of effort into making it to safety.

If you want to add power to your chorus, add Michael McDonald. His solo career and work with the Doobie Brothers is some of the most soul wrenching smooth music out there, and Steely Dan, like Christopher Cross, know the extra unique dimension even just backing vocals from Michael can bring. I’m sure we all try to sing along to Michael’s lines, none of us will do him any justice but I, for one, cannot help myself. I sing it like I mean it, even if the singing is inadequate the fist remains clenched.

I sometimes miss the point with emotions, I didn’t cry when Simba’s dad dies in the Lion King – I cried when Simba realised his destiny and went back to reunite the kingdom. I’m not emotional about the 10 men killed in this song; I’m passionate that the subject of the song makes it to Mexico, makes it to his new life and leaves his past behind him.

Does he make it to Mexico? We never get to find out but I like to think that he did.

Somebody somewhere
In the heat of the night
Looking pretty dangerous
Running out of patience

Tonight in the city
You won’t find any pity
Hearts are being twisted
Another lover cheated, cheated

In the bars and the cafes, passion
In the streets and the alleys, passion
A lot of pretending, passion
Everybody searching, passion

Once in love you’re never out of danger
One hot night spent with a stranger
All you wanted was somebody to hold on to yeah
Passion, passion
Passion, passion

New york, moscow, passion
Hong kong, tokyo, passion
Paris and bangkok, passion
A lotta people ain’t got, passion

Hear it in the radio, passion
Read it in the papers, passion
Hear it in the churches, passion
See it in the school yards, passion

Once in love you’re never out of danger
One hot night spent with a stranger
All you wanted was somebody to hold on to yeah
Once in love you’re never out of danger
One hot night spent with a stranger
All you wanted was somebody to hold on to yeah

Alone in your bed at night, passion
It’s half past midnight, passion
As you turn out your sidelight, passion
Something ain’t right, passion

There’s no passion, there’s no passion
There’s no passion, I need passion
You need passion, we need passion
Can’t live without passion
Won’t live without passion

Even the president needs passion
Everybody I know needs some passion
Some people die and kill for passion
Nobody admits they need passion
Some people are scared of passion
Yeah, passion

  • Pick yourself up from the floor…
