Bronski Beat – Smalltown Boy

Emotion : Joy

Artist : Bronski Beat

Track : Smalltown Boy

Release Details : Forbidden, 1984

Who are the best DJ’s that you’ve ever seen? You’ll doubtless think back to some hazy night in a nightclub with a top club DJ or a basement party with an underground legend.

For my money Duncan’s weekly sets at Cord back in the day were about my favourite DJ sets ever. He can’t mix, he was constantly pissed and he’d get me and Simon DJing with him from time to time but the tracks and the programming was perfect.

This ones dedicated to him as it reminds of those sets. Viva Le Casson.

Suicide – Dream Baby Dream

Duncan, of El Diablo’s Social Club, gets thoughtful and deep.

Emotion : Despondent Hope

Artist : Suicide

Track : Dream Baby Dream

Release Details : Island Records, 1979

I imagine this song always to be the last words spoken by a hopeless yet unrequited romantic who has fucked his chances with the love of his life via a succession of awfully judged booze and downer choices. It’s the sound of a fella who just went loco on Hill Billy Heroin and Gin and is sending his last, strained, tear soaked message to the gal he blew it with, only she’ll never hear it.

Alternatively this could have been the song Raoul Moat sang to himself to keep his spirits up until Gazza got there.

Either way it’s utterly immense and makes you get something in your eye when you hear it.
